JUVENILE JUSTICE REPORT
On the Right Track to Safer Communities:
Steering California's Juvenile Offenders Away from Lives
of Crime
Embargoed for release until May 3, 2007, 12:01AM PDT.
The report finds that California is risking lives and wasting money by
failing to fully fund interventions that have been proven to cut juvenile crime and save
money.
The report contains new county-by-county figures showing that only a fraction of serious
juvenile offender are currently being served by intensive family therapies that have been
proven to cut re-arrests. The report also contains local savings from filling this unmet need,
as well as never before released 05-06 data on local interventions that have shown promising
crime prevention outcomes. Personal success stories from troubled youth are also featured in
the report.
The findings and the recommendations that law enforcement leaders are making in this report are
important to every Californian, because most kids who are arrested, and even serious offenders
who are locked up, will end up back in local communities sooner or later. It is crucial that
California invest in programs that have been proven to stop crime before it starts, and ensure
that young offenders who are taken into custody eventually make a positive and permanent return
to their communities.
On Thursday, May 3rd at 10AM San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris,
Emeryville Police Chief Ken James and San Mateo Police Chief Susan Manheimer
released the report findings during a press conference at the Life Learning
Academy on San Francisco's Treasure Island located at 651 8th Street.
You can listen to a replay of a phone briefing discussing the report's
findings led by Fight Crime: Invest in Kids Executive Committee members,
Santa Ana Police Chief Paul Walters and San Mateo Police Chief Susan
Manheimer, on Wednesday May 2 by dialing 877-919-4059 and entering the pass
code 48082895#.
